FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions about Face & Body Art

Also known as - what you should know before hiring any company/individual.

"Why hire a Professional Facepainter ? I can get someone not as good much cheaper."
We use ONLY the very best high quality professional / theater cosmetic grade paints and palettes that are FDA compliant & we follow strict guidelines for hygienic application.
All glitters are made specifically for the skin and are not craft store glitter which can cut and seriously damage the eyes.

Often with volunteer painters at charities or schools or beginning face painters they are unaware of issues such as non-cosmetic glitter and some events will use acrylic craft paint or craft water colors. Those are NOT approved for skin use despite being labeled ‘non-toxic’. Please see the 'medical info' page for further information right from the company itself. No one would ever want your child or any child attending your function to go home to their parents with rashes or badly stained faces. Paints can cost up to $75 per color and with insurance, websites, correspondence, training, tools, gas, transportation, etc. as overhead, if they are very cheap then something may be drastically missing.

When you hire a professional, you are ensuring skin safe products, clean procedures, insured, prompt and reliable service and a trained, proven skill set so that your guests go away amazed and happy with a beautiful and fun piece of art that they can wear! Many face paint artists steal photos from the internet and pass them off as their own, but you can check out the photos of our real work and compare! Mardi Gras Face Art is not only offers award winning designs, but creates to an international standard of excellence in facepaint design and materials and teaches in Florida and worldwide!

Although Cheap face painting is not good and Good face painting is not cheap, we strive to make this wonderful art form accessible to everyone!
Few match our standards, so we often cannot match prices, but please contact us to see what we can do for you especially if you are a non-profit organization or educational event.

They said they were a professional, how can I tell?
It's always a good idea to check out thier credentials and ensure that the work that is shown is thier own. Ask what they are using for paint and then check to make sure that is what they are actually using, not just telling you the names of reputable brands and then using craft paint or water colors on human skin. Good paints may not make a good painter, but ensuring brands like Snazaroo, Diamond FX, Mehron and TAG are in the artist's kit are a great start and that they are aware of the dangers of watercolor, oils and craft paint on human skin and faces is important!
- Remember to ask of any service that they send examples of actual paint done by the artist they are sending.  It is not uncommon for a larger company to charge a premium for service and send an underpaid beginner painter with low skills to do the work while advertising the work of their best painter.
-Ask if they are insured, have the child abuse registry self check and what, if any, training they have in regards to the art and good hygiene practices.
-Ask about the paint brands they are using...are they FDA compliant?
-Be aware that when requesting multiple services, you may be compromising on one or the other service.  Many clowns are not good face painters and most face painters make lousy clowns. Both of these are art forms that take skill and training and many clowns add face paint so they can charge more and become more marketable, not because they can provide great service.  And a painter putting on a costume doesn't mean they have comedic timing, magic skills or any other skills a talented clown brings to the table.  If you want a mascot, clown, Spiderman, princess, etc. it's often best to hire them separately.  AGAIN, there are exceptions....ask to see the work.
-Are the pictures the same children over and over again?  Often it's a family member who they had a lot of time to paint and may not be representative of the actual work at a party.  Look for client shots of on the job artwork and make sure they are not stolen artwork skimmed off the internet.
-Are they registered with the City of Winnipeg to work at the community centers? if not, then likely they are not an actual business or a trained artist.

If you have a hotdog at a festival or event, they seller has to have a food handler's licence, but in Winnipeg right now, there is no standard for body art like face paint and henna so anyone can have cards and banners that say whatever they want and pay for a space at the festivals.  The festivals and fairs do not check for any credentials - as long as the seller pays to be there, they are allowed to work.  This DOES NOT mean everyone at a fair is using car paint or craft paint on kids - many vendors are great, safe and care about the quality of work and the safety of their guests-  but it does mean it pays to ask questions and be a smart consumer for your child's safety be it out on the town or in your own home or event.

Did you Know?  IMPORTANT if you want services at a Winnipeg Community Center!
Many face painters are not insured or actually allowed to work at Winnipeg's community centers without being approved by the city of Winnipeg.  Many centers do not uphold this regulation but if they know you are having a face/ body artist, they make you ensure that they are approved to be on site.  Mardi Gras Face Art is registered with the City of Winnipeg to work with children and adults in Winnipeg's community centers.  How do you know?  You can give the name of the artist and the company to the center you are planning to rent and they will call to check if they can be hired to work your event at that location or you could call and find out:

I have 15 kids attending...how much time will I need to have them all done?
We do a 2 hour minimum and that is enough time for 15 children to get done with some designs that will make memories!! All children will get fantastic quality paints but how complex we can do their faces depends on the number of children and how much detail is desired. 8-15 kids in an hour and that's 3-8 minutes a child & also allows time for transition in & out of the chair.  Extremely simple crowns can be as little as 1 minute per child, but that is assuming they get right in the chair and don't wiggle!   Glitter tattoos and henna are faster and are also services we offer.

How do I wash it off? Can I show it to my friends tomorrow?
Even the best quality makeup (which is what this is) needs to be washed before bed nightly. This will not only save your sheets, but your skin needs to breathe overnight or you could run the possibility of a skin break out. It washes off with simple soap and water. Use a safe soap (make-up remover, no-tears baby shampoo, face wash, etc.) Make a paste with the soap and the paint. Let the soap and paint sit for 30 seconds, then rinse it off.

Some colors may stain a little, but simply use some cold cream and/or hand lotion or wait for a bit and wash again. Please do not scrub your skin harshly, it is not necessary.

if you want art that will be visible for days after application, please check our services for our glitter tattoos, TempTu and henna offerings back on the
'services' page!

*Airbrush face paint is water resistant and can last through a pool dip and sweaty weather.  This can also be left on overnight if the guest would like that.  Ask about our airbrush face services!

I broke out once after having creamy face paint, will that happen again?
It was probably craft paint. But even with the great quality pallettes used by Mardi Gras Face Art, it is a cosmetic and there may be the very rare person that is sensitive to the paints. You may choose to go with arm or shoulder art instead of the face as that is very unlikely to cause any bother and you can still join the fun! We will not paint skin that appears to be broken, rashy, or unclean or if the client appears to have a cold/flu. All patrons young and old must have a clean face in order to be decorated.

Facepaint is fantastic for the kids, but I'm all grown up....aren't I too old for these shenanagins?
Face art today is not like it used to be! ideally, it's applied by artists with pro-paints and is great for all ages! For years in Europe it's been appreciated as a respected artform just as itself and as a large addition to night life. We are starting to see it now more in the west in the form of advertising in print media-Sobe Drinks, Red Bull greeting girls, Sports Illistrated Swimsuit addition, and on TV - Delta high end bathroom faucets and showerheads and even a New Zealand airline! Face paint is often still applied in a clumsy, 'kid's don't know the difference' way - but when it's an art, it is great for young and old to appreciate - a night out with the girls that is sure to grab attention!!! Stagettes will never be the same!!!
Our facebook fanpage shows ages 4 up to 84!
Family fun or high art - your choice!

My child is 'fussy' about being painted..But I think it's so cute...how do I make them sit?
I'm afraid you don't! Only willing canvases will be painted. We could try and arm or a tummy or you may try going first to show the child it is harmless, and sometimes sitting quietly with the child on your lap is very successful, but it is not our goal to traumatize the child. They will love it when they are ready for it! It is our policy that only clean, happy and willing faces may be painted and this is for health reasons and happiness reasons!

I really don't want a party, I just want it for me...do you do that?
We do private appointments such as 'Baby Bump' painting, studio work, photography sessions and magazine assignments. If you are the owner of an establishment and want your staff painted for an event, that can also be accomplished. If you are a photographer looking to expand your portfolio in a new direction, this could be something to give your next model that special look! Call to explain your event and we can work out the best way to help you succeed in making your staff, event, grand opening, grad / graduation party, BBQ, family reunion, party or bar night the talk of the town!
